Getting Started

Decided to move your diet in a paleo direction but not sure where to begin?

Many people find it’s best to jump in with both feet and do hardcore paleo for 30 days. This will give you the best idea of what results are possible for you, and the strongest encouragement to continue. This usually means throwing (or giving) away all the non-paleo foods in your kitchen – anything containing grains, refined sugar or starch, legumes, dairy products, and industrial/seed oils – and restocking with healthy choices like good meats and vegetables. If something is in your kitchen you’ll probably eat it.

Another option is to take baby steps. I think step 1 should be to eliminate wheat and other gluten-containing grains. Many people have found that this alone makes you feel better, sometimes within days. From there, banish one neolithic food at a time in the order you prefer: refined sugar, seed oils, dairy, beans, etc. At the same time, start incorporating wild seafood or grass fed meats as often as affordable/convenient – even if that’s only once a week. Start choosing organic for some of your fruits and vegetables; those most often contaminated, those most affordable, or some combination.

Either way, I strongly recommend reading a good introductory book like Practical Paleo or The Paleo Solution.  Your library probably has one, or you can find a good selection here.  Try to work on getting enough sleep, exercise, fresh air and sunshine.  Keep reading Madison Paleo for new ideas, perspectives, and resources.
